Roofing Repair Safety Tips for Your Home

Making repairs to your roof can save you money and time, but should only be taken on by skilled homeowners. There are some roof repairs that can be made without calling a professional roofing contractor, but you need to be sure to not over extend yourself because your roof is one of the most important pieces of your home. Repairing your own roof is a great, but be sure to call a contractor if you find a problem you are unfamiliar with. The internet is a great resource for leaning about roof repair projects, but nothing can replace the experience of a qualified Denver roof company.

Before getting up on your roof, make sure that you will not be working in the rain. Tearing away at your roof system without first checking the weather will cause serious problems. Not only are you opening up your house to flooding and water damage you are also putting yourself and the people working with you in danger. Wet roofs are very slippery and the chance of injury is raised exponentially during or immediately following a storm. If you need to remove shingles for your roof repair project make sure you have something to cover the portion of your home you have exposed before starting. Even if you think you will be able to finish the project before the day is through having some sort of covering will help you avoid any unnecessary damage to your roof if you are unable to complete the task. Immediately cover any exposed areas with plastic or felt paper anytime you are leaving repairs unsupervised.

Denver roofers can tell you about the dangers of working on a wet roof. The roof doesn't actually need to be soaked in order to become very slippery. Especially for roofs in need of repair, water can pool in certain areas creating danger zones near the valleys of the roof. When you are placing the ladder to get on the roof make sure to place it three feet away from the wheel. The ladder should lean against the roof and not put too much weight of the gutter system, which can be damaged fairly easily. Be cautious whenever you are on your roof and always work with a buddy. If you are unsure of the safety precautions you should be taking while working on your roof, call a roofing company for their advice.

Don't wear work boots on your roof. Work boots don't flex and will not allow your foot to grip the roof's surface. The best shoe for the job is a running shoe. Running shoes are flexible enough to allow your foot to grip the roof and they have good traction. Work gloves are recommended when working on your roof. The shingles and shakes of your roof can cut your hand and wear them out making you unable to react quickly if you do slip.

  1. It's all about safety first! For the roofs that are really angular and curved, what can you do to keep safety as a must? I know that there's a lot of physical work that goes into roofing, and so wouldn't it be super dangerous to work on those types of roofs without safety ropes of some kind?
